Welcome 2 Warrnambool Project
A community orientation program for migrants (particularly those with low English proficiency)
Warrnambool City Council and Brophy Family & Youth Services working together to achieve common objectives around support of new arrivals to the Warrnambool community.
Objectives:
- To offer opportunities where Warrnambool migrant community members can participate in Warrnambool activities through education, sport/recreation or other community activities;
- To build the capacity of the Warrnambool migrant community to build social networks that cross ethnic and religious groups;
- To offer opportunities which build the capacity of the Warrnambool migrant community to be welcomed and supported by the broader Warrnambool community;
- To offer opportunities to existing Warrnambool residents where they can learn about the migrant’s cultural identities and experiences to promote shared values, foster understanding and strengthen cohesion.
Actions:
Support coordination of community events focussed on dates of cultural significance for migrant communities
- To strengthen capacity of existing W2W partners and other community organisations to engage and provide appropriate services for new migrants, particularly those with low English proficiency.
- To work with partner organisations to deliver welcoming and inclusive multicultural activities and programs which foster integration and build competency of new migrants in Warrnambool.
- To create opportunities which strengthen social connection, foster integration and improve community participation opportunities for new migrants in Warrnambool.
We have partnered with the Warrnambool City Council to develop and present aspects of the Welcoming Cities commitments which align with Brophy’s goals and aspirations to better support our migrant communities. Funded by: The Australian Government - Fostering Intergration Grant and Brophy Family & Youth Services
Migrant/s, Migrant Community/ies
Individuals of any immigration status born overseas.
They can include culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) people, refugees, people seeking asylum, and temporary or permanent residents.
W2W Language Café:

Each Tuesday 9:30 – 11:30 am
NOTE: First session for 2020 is Tuesday 4 February.
W2W Language Café is for anyone who wants to practice their English skills AND for the wider community to meet new people from all over the world.
We are encouraging locals to come into the Café to provide connection between migrants and established residents as a way of creating local connections and sharing community information.
We are a Café addressing social inclusion and connection through great coffee and company. Our volunteers are the driving force of our social enterprise offering their English speaking skills to our migrant community.

Diwali ‘Festival of Lights’
Our 2019 event was celebrated at the Brophy CYC with much feasting, food and was acknowleged within the city with the creation of beautiful rangoli’s.
